Lawrence Coulson is the son of Gerald Coulson, one of the country's foremost landscape and aviation artists and consequently grew up surrounded by art and was always encouraged to draw, his main subject being cars.
At 21 his father encouraged him to try oil painting and he sold his first attempts for £30 each at the local pub, providing him with the confidence to approach a local gallery which became the mainstay of his part-time career. He continued to work by day as a retail manager until, on the 4th July 1997 he was able to hand in his notice and become a professional artist. With galleries selling out and public interest forever rising, one could say that this artist has gone from strength to strength defying so-called academic odds and proving himself as a professional.
