Artist Information:Sophie Harding grew up in Dorset by the sea and was encouraged throughout her childhood to draw and paint as both sides of her family are artistic.
Sophie has consistently sold her paintings since she was sixteen and after graduating from Central St Martin's in 1992 with a BA Hons in Fashion and Textiles, went on to become a freelance illustrator and has had a large variety of her work published.
Sophie Harding moved to Penzance to live by the sea again and now has an attic studio which looks out to St. Michael's Mount - a dream come true! Her paintings are inspired from living in Cornwall, working from sketches and imagination recreating Cornish Style coastal scenes. Sophie's paintings depict the essential nature of Cornwall particularly during the cooler seasons, and she is influenced by the simplicity and charm of naive art and hopes this is conveyed in her work.
Speaking about her worded and clothing paintings Sophie says...
My paintings are full of symbolism depicting love, wishes, needs, hopes, dreams, luck, happiness, broken hearts, humour, truth and serendipity. They are a personal reflection of my state of mind at the time of painting.
All these paintings are heartfelt and come from my soul. Each has a story and characters - people I know and people I love. I include myself in different guises - sometimes as part of shoes, sometimes a dress. They are memories and hopes for the future.
Through the imagery, colour and words I'm conveying thoughts, feelings and experiences. Some are humourous and others are deeper, more spiritual. They are my truth of that moment in time, records of my transformation.
