Tabitha Salmon’s busy professional life as a painter has taken her to places as diverse as Moscow in deep midwinter and Naples at the height of summer. She has drawn at the Races in Deauville and the Feria at Seville. Tabitha was the only artist allowed down the Channel Tunnel when it was being excavated and she dared climb to the top of a giant new bridge in Hong Kong- sketchbook in hand.Her work from a widely-travelled world concentrates on people more than landscape, recording both routines of daily life and the spectacle of public performance. In Russia she drew at the Moscow State circus, fascinated by the surreal combinations of animal and artiste; at Deauville she depicted horses and riders and their High Society entourage then turned her satirical eye on the fashion parade along the beach. At St Moritz there was the same haute couture scene- but this time the races were on ice!
Reportage work- in late-Soviet era Moscow, for instance, which received great critical acclaim - has developed into richer imagery, more imaginative and individual in spirit. In recent years these complex themes have been distilled into definitive, iconic works in oils. As Tabitha says, her people and places are, “a continuing inspiration.”
