Carmen Watson MA RCA
As
an artist I am passionate about the natural world and have spent many
hours painting and drawing on location – painting is a way that helps
me express my feelings in a visual way.
Through my paintings I aim to draw attention to our natural heritage and
the need for its urgent protection. I endeavour to capture something of
the essence of the place and the subject I am depicting. Most of my paintings
have been created locally and I am particularly interested in coastal
scenes. The county of Dorset is home to a varied landscape which consists
of sandy beaches, rugged coastlines, wetlands, forest and heathland. It
therefore provides a wonderful location for artists, naturalists and ornithologists
alike.
I studied Natural History Illustration at the Royal College of Art in
London which gave me the opportunity to specialise and explore coastal
habitats. At the end of my course I was awarded a bursary by KPMG to continue
my studies in Alderney, The Channel Islands. I spent many hours sketching
and observing the Gannets nesting and in flight which was a fantastic
experience.
