Ges Wilson

Ges Wilson - He Gazed, she restedI have lived in Penwith since 1978, after finishing an Art Degree at Exeter and travelling and surfing around the world. My three children were born here and I have worked with all ages as a teacher and community arts worker.

I exhibit in Cornwall and London and in December 2000 I became Principal of St lves School of Painting which means I can continue to paint, to teach and to search.

My work always starts with a person or place, but it is never finished in front of the image. I like to remove it, have it hanging around in the studio for a time, waiting to see what the drawing or painting suggests as a solitary object.

I make work that is either figurative or semi abstract landscape, both arising from the act of drawing, not primarily as an observed record - but describing experience and memory, sometimes obscured by time; the impermanence of events and memories forever. I feel it is important not to control too much, so allowing an intuitive response to the unexpected.

Processes are important and I may use layering, mixed media, dripping, pouring, drawing with sticks to allow materials and processes to reveal something workable, something that communicates personal encounters, maybe on the ocean, surfing, sailing, tasting salt tasting spray, remembering misty days, cherishing a good wave ...... isolating events and people from my personal diary.

I try to simplify and to look fresh at a time, a space, an object removed from its surroundings, often just glimpsed and revealed.
