Nicola Rose
To me painting is a pure, physical act that allows me to put myself into the work. To achieve my results I use large flat-ended brushes, palette knife and my hands, I apply paint, scrape back and draw through it allowing the painting to evolve over time.
As a result each canvas consists of many paintings layered one on top of the other, creating a rich history of colours and textures. Nicola takes her inspiration from wild, remote and mountainous landscapes, seeking to capture the essence of the weather, structures, ice and water through the use of oil paint.
I have travelled extensively for subjects in South Africa, Greek islands New Zealand, India and Israel, the unpredictable west coast of Britain and the forbidding interior and glacial regions of Iceland where ice slices through the land in gigantic frozen waves.
The paintings are a personal response to the extreme forces of nature Nicola's work has found its way into collections all over the world, including that of actor and comedian Ricky Gervais.
