Sally Winter
Sally
Winter is best known for her vibrant and evocative Etchings and Collagraphs.
A former member of the National Society of Printmakers and the Society
of Botanical Artists her work has been enthusiastically collected
worldwide for over thirty years . As the Artist behind the award winning
Seasons range of greeting cards published by Ling Design she was recently
awarded the industry award for best Fine Art Range .
After moving to Dorset she trained in printmaking at Bournemouth
College of Art and Design before establishing her own etching studio
. Working from here here she creates small editions of both Etchings
and Collagraphs relating to the nearby Coast , the New Forest and
the detail of her surroundings. While occasionally working in the
traditional Etching palette of black and white , she has worked over
a number of years to develop a unique inking process which allows
for multiple colours on one plate, making each etching within an edition
an ‘original’.
In addition to the Mall Galleries and Westminster Halls in London her work is regularly exhibited at the Hampton Court Flower Show and the Business Design Centre in Islington . Work is also available at selected Galleries within the UK .
Methodology
Sally Winter Etchings with Aquatint combine traditional Intaglio
etching methods with a unique and contemporary approach to applying
colour.
Drawings are made onto a waxed zinc plate which is then immersed in Nitric Acid, the original drawing is thereby etched permanently into the plate . Tone is realised through the use of Aquatint resin which is progressively etched to provide tonal range.
Making the plate can take several weeks but once completed will be hand inked to create each print within the edition. If the edition is 100 the plate will be individually hand inked 100 times. Sally’s colouring of the plate has been developed over 30 years and in the majority of cases is all done in one application.
This leads to colour variation and makes every Etching within the edition an Original Print.
