Oliver Pyle - A Warm Evening at Lulworth Cove

Oliver has established himself as a successful landscape artist, working exclusively in watercolour.  With Oliver's work we explore the impact of light, the weather, and the seasons and how these combine to achieve paintings that are evocative and atmospheric.

You need not be a student of geology to find Lulworth Cove a thoroughly engaging place. If you are however, it must be as if all your birthdays and Christmases have come at once! A combination of different rock strata - Portland limestone, Purbeck limestone, clays, greensand and chalk - and the erosive impact of the sea, scooping out the softer layers, has created this curious 'bite' out of the Dorset coastline.

This horseshoe-shaped bay is home to a handful of small fishing boats, and a popular mooring for summer pleasure craft. Should you venture on shore you will find a sheltered beach - ideal for skimming pebbles - excellent visitor centres and gift shops, welcoming pubs and cafés and some very charming thatched cottages in the village. If you are stopping for afternoon tea do not make the mistake of asking for a slice of Lulworth Crumple. Yes, it sounds like a local Dorset pastry, but it is the name for the almost-vertical rock layers (as you can see in the painting) that have been buckled in a seismic event many years gone by! But don't worry, have a lardy cake instead - they're pretty good, and a stiff walk up the path behind the Cove and over the top to Durdle Door will quickly take care of your calorific extravagance!
