Oliver Pyle - Evening Approaches, Corfe Castle

Oliver has established himself as a successful landscape artist, working exclusively in watercolour.  With Oliver's work we explore the impact of light, the weather, and the seasons and how these combine to achieve paintings that are evocative and atmospheric.

"I am the first to admit that I am a menace to other motorists. Rather than being focussed on the perfunctory task of driving I much prefer to keep an eye on the distant hills, turning pale blue in a warm haze. Or observe the deep orange winter sun arbitrarily highlighting the oak tree's branches against a slate grey cloud behind it. The truth is I should not combine these activities, but it is difficult not to!

However, in this scene no distracting sideway glances are necessary. As you take the road out of Swanage you enter the charming village of Corfe Castle, and there slap bang in the middle of your windscreen is this stunning view, with the castle presiding over the comings-and-goings in the streets below. It just slaps you round the face....in a very good way! It is a scene for me that is full of nostalgia and pleasant memories - without a doubt my favourite view from a car window.

It isn't an easy scene to paint - there's a lot going on and the temptation to cram in too much detail is very real, especially in the castle. To do so would spoil the evening atmosphere, and bring it too far forward into the painting. The cottages also need to be kept quiet, to prevent them competing with The Greyhound Inn, an inescapable presence on the bend in the road."
